What is conscious dance/ somatic movement therapy?

Somatic movement, generally speaking, is one which is performed consciously with the intention of focusing on the internal experience of the movement.

Conscious dance is a beautiful artistic movement practise to help you reconnect with your body, and to encourage you to move from the inside out. We are energy bodies and when we connect with our body and move with awareness we can release what no longer serves us and allow ALL of ourself to be seen, felt, and heard. This then results in personal, profound realisations which unravel into our consciousness. Conscious dance is a body, mind, emotional and spiritual journey.

Movement is communication. When we are more mindful and conscious when we move and dance, we can bring the unconscious to the conscious and get in touch with our inner state.


How is your teaching work different from other conscious dance practices?

Most conscious dance practices that I am aware of are usually group class experiences. The awareness and message they provide is very much in alignment with my work.

There are of course many benefits in experiencing a group session.

However I prefer to work one-on-one with clients, so that I can support them in the best possible ways. Often I feel that in a group setting people can ‘hide’ themselves easily. When I work individually with clients I can really focus on their unique desire and needs during the session, there is no hiding. This helps me to be able to connect more deeply with the client (body) in front of me and be the empathetic observer. I create safe spaces and place my client at the centre of their own experience and reflect what is happening back to them.

Often in a group class settings clients can feel more self-conscious, and therefore not open up and let go in the same ways as when they are alone. In my experience when I work one-on-one with clients they relax more quickly, have less distractions and are of course not concerned by what others around them are thinking or doing.

 

My methodology as a conscious dance movement guide is to create experiences that encourage clients to get in touch with their thoughts, choices, and feelings. We tend to be pre-occupied and live inside our heads and disconnect from our bodies. While it is wonderful to have a creative and active mind my work supports you to connect with your body intelligence and become more body-centred. This in turn connects you to your knowing (your truths) and into being. To move from this place deep within, it changes the way you see, feel, and experience the world around you.

During my sessions we explore through authentic movement, structured therapeutic movement, body awareness, observing tension within the body, postural exploration, visualisations, symbology, mirroring/reflection, motivation, breathing techniques, love & care, and relaxation. I meet you where ever you are at; physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I see you. I hear you.

I have dedicated my life to the art of dance and to understanding the intelligence of the body. I believe there is no swifter, truer way for someone to reach his/her fullest growth potential than through a conscious somatic movement practice. Who we are is reflected and manifested in our bodies. The way we move or do not move our body can often be a metaphor for how we move and interact with life.

My work helps to build the bridge (transition space) that separates the inner and outer self allowing the deep knowledge of the unconscious to manifest in movement and image.


How long is a movement session with you?

Typically I teach one hour movement sessions and I guide the whole experience. The sessions begin and end slowly, and are a little more energised, movement wise, during the mid-section of the experience. I blend world/new age type music and guide clients through various structured therapeutic movements and body awareness techniques, observing tension within the body, postural exploration, visualisations, symbology, mirroring/reflection, breathing techniques, love, and care. The session ends with grounding floor-work which blends some yoga movements with relaxation, stillness, and meditation.

Why do you mainly teach One-on-One sessions?

I mainly work one-on-one with clients, so that I can support my clients in the best possible ways. I feel my best work unfolds when I invest my life-force energy, spiritual guidance, intuition and experience into one human ‘being’ at a time. This creates the biggest shifts I have witnessed in transformation and expanded awareness.

Yes I do offer group movement workshops and have spent many years teaching in these settings.

I love yoga but I want to experience something different, are your sessions yoga/dance?

My sessions are very much rooted in a yogic experience. If you enjoy yoga you will also enjoy my sessions as they offer you the time and space to connect with the wisdom of your body, to be mindful and more conscious about the choices you make moment to moment. Dance is a wonderful way to shift energy in the body and release emotional knots, and blockages. The body does not lie. I believe when our body is strengthen then our foundation is strong. From this entry point we can then heal and grow mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Through conscious movement we connect with self expression, truth, unity and encounter ourselves in a deeper way. This is also the same each time we step onto our yoga mats.

What are the benefits in taking a somatic movement session with you?

You will rediscover things about yourself that you have suppressed, ignored or forgotten about yourself. When we allow ALL of ourself to be seen, felt, and heard, then personal, profound realisations start to unravel in to our consciousness.

In the world that we are living in most people live inside their heads to much of the time. Always thinking and often disconnected from their bodies, feelings and emotions. Conscious dance helps to encourage people to get out of their heads, and gain more body awareness. By paying attention to your body, you will receive so many benefits for your overall health and well-being. Our bodies are highly energetic masterpieces responding to every thought, feeling and emotion that we express. Allowing your inner guidance system to support you, changes how you see, feel and live your life. Conscious dance is a beautiful creative and expressive way to reconnect us to our inner guidance system.

Yes my retreats are suitable for all ages and levels and no experience is necessary. I create safe spaces and meet you where ever you are at on your journey through life. What makes Ibiza a great choice for a wellness retreat?

Growing up in the UK I only knew Ibiza for the clubbing and rave parties! How very wrong I was! Ibiza is a very well kept secret and has a beautiful, raw spiritual side.

Ibiza’s 'Hippie' period being was one of its most influential times. In the 1960's, the island became very popular with movie stars, artists, writers, and artisans and this combined with tourism made Ibiza the European equivalent of San Francisco.

Ibiza reminds me too, in many ways, of Bali and Goa. The island's reputation as a place of free thinking and self expression still thrives to this day and there are numerous hippy markets. You simply can’t visit Ibiza without experiencing the famous drummers whilst watching the sunset at Benirras beach.

I am a ex-professional dancer, how will your conscious dance sessions interest me?

As an ex-professional dancer myself, I speak the same language as you. I love the art of dance and as I get older I appreciate that there are many forms of dance but at the core of each there is always a deep, profound and united message….creative self expression.

We are creative ‘beings’ and so to dance is to create.

If dance is in your blood you will love these sessions. Uplifting and inspiring music that is guaranteed to hit a deep emotional note within. I never realised dance could be my therapist till I was introduced to the incredible world of conscious somatic movement. It blew my mind and changed my life in profound and positive ways. Conscious movement is a wonderful form of therapy. When I dance it helps me to figure out any struggles or obstacles I am facing in my life. Dance is a language that speaks to me, when I dance I GET it, everything makes better sense, life feels easier.

The reason I dance is to meet myself; to be with myself; to align with my higher self; to create space; to reveal and embody my truth; to release what no longer serves me; and to take responsibility for my thoughts, emotions and actions.
