How much time do you spend nurturing your relationship with your body?

If I was to ask you what it is you LOVE, how long do you think it would be until you said ‘your body’ ? I would imagine that you would be able to say a long list of everything you love but maybe your body isn’t top of the list, or even a priority to be on the list? BUT, without your body where would you be? It is after all, the only place we truly live. My invitation this week is for you to take some time and really appreciate and nurture your relationship with your body. I know when I woke up to being more attuned to my body, everything changed in my life. I have danced since I was three years old. My first love was classical ballet and I trained everyday, six days a week since the age of eight years old. If you have ever experienced any kind of intensive ballet training you will know that it requires a lot of discipline and hard word to achieve the results needed to ‘make it’ in the competitive world of ballet. My dream was to become a prima ballerina. A dream that I know is very common for many little girls.. I wasn’t born with the ideal body for classical ballet but I pushed and worked SO very hard for many years to mould, strengthen and stretch my body to create the form that classical ballet required. It required lots of blood, sweat and tears, believe me! I expected a lot of my body every single day. Thankfully for me my body was there for me, supporting me every step of the way on my journey. I was one of the fortunate ones who was, throughout my professional dancing career, free from any serious injuries. But there came a point when my body said enough. I was in my early 30’s at the time and I seriously felt like an old frail woman. I was in so much pain on a daily basis, particularly in my back, hips and knees. It was the years of pushing my body to do very unnatural movements. It had taken it’s toll on me physically. I knew then I had to change my relationship with my body. I could no longer keep pushing and expecting my body to always be there for me. I didn't want to feel so immobile in my 30’s. Many of us expect a lot from our bodies, and it’s only when our body starts shouting and screaming at us that we really wake up, pay attention, and make steps to change. This is a behaviour and pattern I see with so many women I work with. I wonder why this is the case, why do we often ignore our body so much that it has to scream at us to get our attention?! I love to dance and I know in this lifetime that this is what I am meant to do. I love it with every fibre of my being. When I dance I meet myself; I feel at one with myself; it helps me align with my higher self; I discover and embody my truth; I am able to release what no longer serves me; to play, be free, untamed, and to take responsibility for my thoughts, emotions and actions. I knew that in order to continue to dance I had to make some serious life changes and that started with nurturing my relationship with myself and my body. I had to discover a new way to move my body. To be more mindful, conscious, and compassionate. To not look outside myself for the answers but to venture within and connect with my body wisdom. Everything changed for me when I began to slow down, pay attention to my body signals, and ask for guidance from within. I had no real idea at the time how that would alter my life in such profound ways, but every part of my life shifted. As a classical dancer I had always thought that I was in tune with my body, that I knew my body very well, but what I didn’t know was the incredible depth of wisdom and intelligence that lies within. Our own inner map is just waiting to be explored and nurtured. Through awareness our path lights up, and leads us to untold riches. My invitation is to you to make a commitment today to change your relationship with your body.

For you to slow down, take some time for yourself and tune inwards. Listen to the signals and sensations that your body is telling you in this moment. Don’t wait till your body next screams at you. Make your relationship with your body a number one priority today. So if not now, when? A great place to start would be to; Notice how does your body feel in this moment?

What sensations can you feel? Do you feel any painful, tight, blocked areas in your body?

What is your body telling you right now?

Listen very carefully and describe what your body is telling you. If your body parts could speak what would they say? What one thing can you do now, to sense more comfort and pleasure in your body?

Make the shift, and start with small acts of daily body love. When you do, you will be amazed at just how much wisdom your body will reveal to you.

Love your body for the miracle it is, it’s the one relationship in your life that you should nurture and love the most.
