If you are lacking in self-confidence then this may help you today. . . It’s very easy to compare oneself to others, whether that be on a work level, during our yoga/ dance/ fitness practice, or when with friends or family members. Here comes that. . . "I am not good enough" (again) Time and time again I work with clients who spend a lot of time worrying about what others think of them. It actually stops them from doing things, as it makes them feel less confident about their abilities to succeed, or to be of serve, to be truly seen/heard, or to be authentic. I can honestly say I have also felt this way many many times in my life, I believe we all do. In the past I have compared myself to others, and felt a deep desire to achieve what they have done or are doing. But in doing this it also puts demands / high expectations on myself, I can be over-run with self-doubt, lacking in confidence, and it stresses me out. Often we wish we had the skills they had, to be more masterful in our movement practices (like our teachers/ masters), to be a better public speaker, to be running a successful business rather than being at a start up level, etc, etc. All this can of course knock our self-confidence. Then came the 'light bulb' moment for me. It's simple yet I found this realisation profound.

Why do I compare myself to others when perhaps this particular person has been doing (what I am doing) for so many more years and so therefore is far more masterful at it. Why wouldn’t they be, it make perfect sense. They have spent more time practising and honing their craft. There is no way right now that I have the same knowledge, or understanding.

BUT the more investment I make, in terms of giving myself more time, practise and attention (energy flows where attention goes). I will become more competent. In becoming 'better at’, more competent at, the more my self-confidence will grow. I will get better at whatever I practise. As an ex-dancer I remember hearing many times, ‘practise makes perfect’. Well my thoughts on perfection are for another blog another day, but for now the next time you sense a lack in confidence because you compare yourself to others STOP and remind yourself of this. . . I will get better at whatever I practise. (my new mantra) Confidence helps step you into your power and navigate your way through the dance of life with greater ease and trust. SO what will YOU practise today? Let’s be moved by the exploration of self…..
